Reading order: the story behind the page

A reader may listen to a PDF rather than see its layout. The order in which content is presented needs to preserve the meaning of the page.

Follow the ideas, not the coordinates

A two-column page can be read in the wrong sequence if content jumps from one column to the other. A caption may also appear far from the image it explains. Correct order keeps related content together.

Inspect structure and interaction

Reading order and keyboard tab order are related but distinct checks. Review the sequence of document content, then check how interactive elements are reached. Visual position alone does not establish either one.

Read the result through

Test the document with an appropriate assistive technology and follow the entire sequence. Listen for fragments, repeated content, missing text, or instructions separated from the action they describe. Record issues by page and content so they can be corrected.
